Meet Lingfield's Head of Football - Toby Hill

Meet Lingfield Head of Football - Toby Hill

Football at Lingfield is going from strength to strength.  Many of our students play at academy or club level and bring their love of the game to our school teams.  In 2024, 2 year groups reached ESFA and ISFA quarter-finals and semi-finals, and year 9 went all the way to the ESFA finals. Girls' football is growing in popularity and this year we launched our first U18 girls' side.

Leading the football programme is Mr Toby Hill. Let's find out more about him!

How did you start playing football?
I began playing football at a young age with my local team and grew up as a Brighton & Hove Albion season ticket holder. Whether playing or watching, I’ve always had a deep passion for football.

What do you like about the game?
Football is a dynamic sport that constantly challenges you, whether you’re on the pitch or coaching from the sidelines. The tactical side of the game, along with the technical development of players, is something I find incredibly rewarding.

How do you plan to inspire the students in the game?
I plan to create a professional environment that challenges them to raise their standards and pushes them to improve. By fostering a culture of accountability and dedication, I want every player to feel motivated and invested in their development. It's important to establish a strong team identity where all players are aligned, with both collective and individual goals. This way, each player understands their role within the team while striving for personal growth.

What do you look for in great players?
Great players show commitment, a growth mindset, and the willingness to put the team before themselves. While skill is important, attitude, resilience, and the ability to learn and adapt are what set the best players apart. I value players who work hard, never give up, and can lift their teammates with their enthusiasm and positivity.

What advice do you have for young football players?
Stay dedicated, enjoy the game, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Each setback is an opportunity to grow. Listen to your coaches, support your teammates, and push yourself to keep improving. Remember that being respectful, working hard, and showing up consistently will take you far both on and off the field.
