What is the EPQ?
Lingfield College EPQ Co-ordinator, Mrs Atherton, takes us through the benefits of studying for this qualification.
The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) isn’t just another academic achievement—it’s an opportunity for Sixth Form students to take ownership of their learning, develop invaluable skills, and truly stand out in university and job applications. I have the privilege of supporting students through one of the most enriching and rewarding qualifications they can take alongside their A Levels.
What is the EPQ?
The EPQ is an independent, research-based qualification that allows students to explore a topic they are passionate about in real depth. It can take the form of:
- A 5,000-word research report,
Or,
- An artefact (such as a piece of artwork, a model, or even a documentary) accompanied by a 1,000-word research report.
Why is the EPQ so valuable?
The EPQ is highly regarded by both universities and employers because it demonstrates a student’s ability to manage an independent project over an extended period. It showcases intellectual curiosity, academic resilience, and self-discipline—all of which are key qualities for success post sixth form.
How does the EPQ work?
The EPQ is a structured yet self-directed project, requiring students to:
- Choose a topic of personal interest
- Plan and conduct independent research
- Develop their ideas into a final product (either a research report or an artefact with a report)
- Evaluate their research and learning journey through a detailed logbook (Project Q)
- Present their process to an audience, showcasing their research and conclusions.
Throughout the process, students strengthen their ability to engage with academic sources, construct well-founded arguments, and reflect critically on their own learning—valuable skills for university and future careers.
What can students research?
One of the most exciting aspects of the EPQ is its flexibility—students can explore virtually any topic that interests them! Some fascinating projects from recent years include:
- How can the UK improve support for dementia carers?
- Will the Online Safety Bill provide sufficient protection for young people?
- Writing a Western-style play script, inspired by classic Western films.
- Designing an artefact that demonstrates the principles behind creating both challenging and aesthetically pleasing golf courses.
Student testimonials
The EPQ allowed me to explore a fascinating topic that I would not have had the opportunity to study in class. I researched the ethics and justification of using the atomic bomb on Japan to end the Second World War. It was really eye-opening to discover the unsung voices involved in the conflict.
By doing this topic, I have gained valuable writing and analysis skills that set me up very well for studying History at University. At first, I was hesitant to start the EPQ journey, but now looking back I have no regrets.
Monty, Year 13
How is the EPQ Assessed?
Students are awarded grades from A to C*, based not just on their final product but on their entire research process—how well they manage their project, engage with sources, and reflect on their progress. More information can be found on the AQA website (Level 3 Extended Project Qualification 7993 Specification Specification)
The final assessment is based on:
- The research and development process
- The quality of the final project (report or artefact)
- The student’s presentation and reflection
It’s a fantastic way for students to showcase their ability to think independently and tackle complex ideas.
Benefits of the EPQ
- University Preparation
Many universities value the EPQ as excellent preparation for higher education. The experience of writing a long-form research report provides a strong foundation for dissertations and extended essays at university. - Skill Development
Students develop essential skills in time management, research, critical thinking, problem-solving, and academic writing—all of which are highly transferable to any subject or career. - Stronger UCAS Applications
A well-executed EPQ makes a personal statement stand out, demonstrating enthusiasm, commitment, and expertise in a chosen subject. Some universities even lower grade requirements for students who achieve an A or A* in their EPQ!
Support for EPQ Students at Lingfield College
At Lingfield College, we provide structured guidance throughout the EPQ journey:
Weekly taught sessions (similar to university-style lectures) cover key skills such as research methods, referencing, and project management.
Students are also provided with one-to-one supervisor support, helping them refine their research questions and offering feedback along the way.
