Lingfield Physics Students Expand Their Knowledge at CERN

On 31st January 18, Sixth Form students and staff from the Lingfield Science department travelled to Geneva for an exciting two-day visit to CERN, home to the Large Hadron Collider. This mind-blowing science hub provides researchers with a unique range of particle accelerator facilities to advance the boundaries of human knowledge.

At CERN, students toured one of the four detectors (these are spread over a 27 km circumference) and the main Control Centre. They really enjoyed the scientifically accurate information from the CERN scientist who took them around the detector.  Students also spent a few hours enjoying the hands-on exhibitions and listening to presentations on how some of those displays work.

On Day two, students visited the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, which houses the UN Human Rights Council and the UN Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights, among other agencies. They also visited the city and experienced some of the local cuisine.

I particularly enjoyed the tour around CERN and getting to see the ALICE detector and learning about its components and detector systems. The tour guide was also very informative and gave lots of information about the booster system for the LHC.
