From A Levels to Apprenticeships: Exploring Your Post-18 Options at Lingfield College

Deciding what comes next after A Levels is both an exciting and important milestone. At Lingfield College Sixth Form, we believe every student’s journey is unique, which is why we’re committed to helping you find the right pathway for your future. Whether it’s heading to university, securing an apprenticeship, or exploring other opportunities, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

For students who want to combine practical experience with academic achievement, apprenticeships offer an excellent option that opens doors to a wide range of industries. There's a pathway to suit every ambition, from Intermediate and Higher Apprenticeships to prestigious Degree Apprenticeships. Here’s everything you need to know about apprenticeships and how Lingfield College can prepare you for this exciting route.

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a real job that allows you to gain hands-on experience while studying for qualifications that are relevant to your role. It’s the perfect combination of earning and learning, with many apprenticeships leading directly to permanent employment or further progression opportunities.

Apprenticeships can be as flexible as they are rewarding. You might attend college one day a week or study online in between work commitments. Employers often tailor these programmes in collaboration with educational institutions to ensure that apprentices gain the skills needed for workplace success.

Financially, apprenticeships are a compelling choice. You’ll receive a salary (with Higher and Degree Apprenticeships often paying £12–£14 per hour) and won’t need to worry about tuition fees—your employer and the government cover the costs.

When Can You Start an Apprenticeship?

Students can begin an apprenticeship after completing their A Levels or BTECs, making it a natural next step for Sixth Form students. Most students apply for Higher or Degree Apprenticeships, which are equivalent to qualifications such as Level 4 (certificate), Level 5 (foundation degree), or Level 6/7 (bachelor’s or master’s degree).

Applications for many programmes open in the autumn or spring for roles starting the following September. Entry requirements vary depending on the level of apprenticeship, but most Higher and Degree Apprenticeships require at least two A Levels or the equivalent in BTECs. Specific grades or subjects may be needed depending on the apprenticeship. For example, engineering apprenticeships often look for strong results in A Level Maths.

Unlike university applications, apprenticeship opportunities are often available year-round, providing flexibility to apply when the right role arises. This flexibility means you can apply whenever the right opportunity arises, making it easier to transition from school to work without delay.

Industries Offering Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are available across a diverse range of industries, offering roles that match a variety of interests and aspirations.

  • Technology: Rapidly growing areas such as cybersecurity, software development, and data analytics offer exciting opportunities for students with a passion for innovation.

  • Engineering and Manufacturing: Apprenticeships in civil engineering, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing are ideal for students with strong STEM skills. They provide a hands-on approach to learning in high-demand sectors.

  • Healthcare: Degree Apprenticeships in nursing, paramedic science, and laboratory work allow students to gain qualifications while working in hospitals or clinics, addressing skills shortages in critical areas.

  • Finance and Business: Apprenticeships in accounting, auditing, and management often lead to professional certifications, such as ACCA or CIMA, and provide a pathway to roles with leading financial organisations.

  • Creative Industries: Marketing, media production, and design apprenticeships are perfect for students eager to explore their creative talents in professional environments.

  • Law: Legal apprenticeships offer an alternative route to becoming a solicitor or paralegal, enabling students to gain valuable workplace experience while saving on tuition costs.

Lingfield College students have secured apprenticeships at prestigious organisations across these industries, including PwC, BMW, Thales, Nestlé, BP, Rolls-Royce, EY, UBS, BAE Systems, Surrey Police, the Royal Air Force, and RBS. These opportunities highlight the breadth of career pathways available and the success of our students in competitive fields.

Why Choose an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships offer a unique combination of learning and earning, making them an attractive option for many students. Here’s why they’re worth considering:

  • Earn a salary while gaining qualifications.

  • Develop hands-on, industry-relevant skills by working alongside experienced professionals.

  • Achieve recognised qualifications without the burden of tuition fees, with training costs covered by employers and government funding.

  • Many apprenticeships lead to permanent roles, offering clear pathways for career progression.

  • Build a professional network early, opening doors to future opportunities.
