Economics Students Engage in Insightful Talks at the Institute of Fiscal Studies

Hugh Pym speaking at POLECONUK

"On Tuesday 26th November, we embarked on an exciting journey to POLECONUK to attend a prestigious conference organised by the Institute of Fiscal Studies. We had the invaluable opportunity to hear from a diverse lineup of influential speakers, each offering unique perspectives on fiscal policy, economics, and politics - with a particular focus on the recent Labour Budget and the election of Trump in the US election.

The event featured thought-provoking talks from renowned figures in the political and economic space. The speakers represented a broad spectrum of economic beliefs, from listening to right-leaning Mark Littlewood's thoughts on the Truss Premiership, to left-leaning Grace Blakeley, the author of Vulture Capitalism, explaining how Capitalism has failed us. There was clearly a broad range of viewpoints and perspectives in the room.

Other notable speakers included Ed Balls, former shadow of the exchequer; Hugh Pym, BBC NHS correspondent; and Kate Raworth, author of Donut Economics - a model explaining how global economies can and should shift to include economic growth (or the lack of it) without exceeding our planetary boundaries.

This unforgettable experience enriched our understanding of real-world economics and fostered lively discussions about economic theory and its practical applications. Thank you to Mr Bolton and Mrs Illing for making this incredible extra-curricular learning opportunity possible!"
