Students Experiment with Time for British Science Week
The theme for this year's British Science Week was Time, so years 7 and 8 explored how time impacts everything from their day-to-day activities, to the earth’s atmosphere and the structure of our solar system.
Students created a timeline and ordered certain events in time over 13.8 billion years, back to the beginning of the universe. Accurate measurement is a cornerstone of good science, so students had to plan and devise a method to measure 10 seconds accurately and reliably. The third activity was to make a Seasons Tellurium, which shows the Earth's position and the ever-changing sunlight it receives throughout the seasons of the year.
They also attempted to make a nocturnal; a very old timekeeping marvel that shows how the positions of well-known stars and constellations in the night sky can be used to tell the time.
The winners received prizes for teamwork, accurate measurements, and quality of work.
