Celebrating National Teaching Assistants’ Day

244,000 teaching assistants (TAs) work in schools across the UK and National Teaching Assistants’ Day was created to show thanks for their long hours in classrooms and their vital work to support children’s education.

Teaching assistants undertake a variety of roles in the classroom, from providing small groups of children with extra support in a specific area to working with a child one-on-one or helping those with special educational needs.

"What I love about being a Teaching Assistant is the variety each day brings. As well as helping children from different age groups achieve their goals I can use my own strengths in the classroom, for example I can be arty, creating props and backdrops for school plays as well as class artwork, I get to use my brain to support maths sets and I can be there to emotionally support children if they need it. Each day allows you to help children reach their full potential. An added bonus is that you also walk around school like a celebrity, as the children always love you!"

"I started as a teaching assistant 20 years ago at Lingfield Prep.  It was originally a maternity cover contract and this was soon changed to a full time contract. I have loved working in Year 2 and the role is very varied. I enjoy helping the teachers prepare lesson materials, set up and tidy the classroom. The role is rewarding and I enjoy working with the children to help them make progress.  I work well in a team, and everyone in KS1 is very supportive of my job. It is important to be flexible, adaptable and have a positive attitude. My passion is hearing children read and ensuring good communication with parents in the home reading record. It is very rewarding to keep in touch with pupils that are now grown up and feel that I have helped to make a difference to their education."

Today not just about recognising the work of TAs, but also about celebrating their contribution to the education system. Teaching assistants play a vital role in supporting teachers, helping children with their learning, and creating a positive and inclusive environment in the classroom. They are an integral part of the education system and deserve recognition for their hard work and dedication.
